The advantages of physical precious metals — no counterparty risk, no dependency on any institution's solvency — carry a corresponding responsibility. Owning bullion means owning custody. How you receive, store, and insure your metal is not a detail. It is the difference between a well-protected holding and a preventable loss.
Insured delivery
Any reputable dealer will ship metal fully insured, in discreet packaging, via a carrier with signature-required delivery. Insurance should cover the full replacement value from the moment the package leaves the dealer's facility until it is signed for at your address. Ask specifically about the insurance policy, the deductible, and the claims process before your first order.
- Full replacement-value insurance, door to door.
- Signature required on delivery — never leave metal on a porch.
- Discreet packaging with no external branding indicating contents.
- Tracking provided from the moment of shipment.
- Prompt claims process if the package is lost or damaged.
Home storage
Some investors prefer to hold metals at home for immediate access and complete personal control. This approach requires a quality safe that is anchored, fire-rated, and located discreetly. It also requires that you understand the limits of your homeowner's insurance policy — most standard policies cap precious-metals coverage at a very low figure, which means additional scheduled coverage or a separate rider is usually necessary.
Safe deposit boxes
Bank safe deposit boxes are convenient and inexpensive but come with two important limitations. First, bank contents are not covered by FDIC insurance — you must arrange separate coverage. Second, access is restricted to bank business hours and depends on the bank remaining open. For modest holdings, a safe deposit box combined with private insurance can be an appropriate solution.
Third-party depositories
For larger holdings, and for any metal held inside a Precious Metals IRA, a third-party depository is the standard solution. Approved depositories provide institutional-grade physical security, full insurance through underwriters that specialize in bullion, and independent audit procedures. Most offer two storage options:
- Segregated storage — your specific coins and bars held separately, uniquely identified as yours.
- Commingled (allocated) storage — metal of the same type and weight held together, with your ownership recorded on the books.
Depository storage is not surrendering control. It is delegating custody to a professional with insurance, audits, and physical infrastructure you cannot replicate at home.
Choosing what is right for you
Many investors use a combination — a modest home holding for immediate access, and the majority of their position at a professional depository. If your metals are inside a retirement account, the choice is made for you: depository storage is required.
